TBpeople Philippines Journey to Palo, in the Province of Leyte

TBpeople Philippines held a productive visit and meeting with Mayor Remedios ‘Matin’ L. Petilla and her team in Palo to discuss strategies for fighting tuberculosis (TB) in the community. Accompanied by Dr. Leo Calonia and Ms. Aleli Plazuela. Representatives from TBpeople Philippines focused on the Discipleship Program, designed to empower TB survivors to become advocates and leaders within their communities. The program aims to equip survivors with the necessary tools and knowledge to share their experiences and support others who are navigating the challenges of TB treatment and recovery.

During the meeting, the potential for collaboration between TBpeople Philippines and the local government was a central topic. The team discussed how working together could strengthen efforts to prevent and treat TB in Palo. TBpeople Philippines and the local government can implement more effective strategies and initiatives to raise awareness about TB, improve access to treatment, and provide necessary resources to those affected by the disease. This collaboration is seen as a vital step in creating a more robust support system for TB patients in the region.

Additionally, the meeting highlighted the importance of establishing local patient support groups and creating ordinances to support TB-affected populations. Patient support groups can provide a platform for individuals to share their experiences, receive emotional support, and access valuable information about TB treatment and care. Ordinances, on the other hand, can help ensure that TB patients receive the necessary support from local authorities, including access to healthcare services and protection against discrimination. Together, these efforts aim to create a supportive environment where TB patients can receive the care and assistance, they need to overcome the disease and lead healthy, productive lives.
