TBPeople Philippines Celebrates 40 Years of the Tropical Disease Foundation’s Legacy

TBPeople Philippines proudly joined the commemoration of the 40th anniversary of the Tropical Disease Foundation (TDF) in Makati City, celebrating decades of dedicated service and innovation in the fight against tropical diseases, particularly tuberculosis (TB). The event highlighted the foundation’s profound contributions to public health, with a special focus on the impact it has had on the lives of TB patients, many of whom are now leading the charge as advocates in the fight against the disease.

Among the individuals whose lives were transformed by TDF’s work are Mrs. Danica Duran, Mr. Michael Lugtu, and Mr. Vin Ferry—now prominent TB advocates and officers of TBPeople Philippines. These individuals, once patients themselves, have become living testaments to the power of effective treatment and the importance of continued advocacy for TB awareness and care. They credit the Tropical Disease Foundation with not only saving their lives but also inspiring them to give back by supporting others through their advocacy work.

Particularly noteworthy is Mrs. Ma. Eloisa Zepeda-Teng, President and Founder of TBPeople Philippines, whose journey with the Tropical Disease Foundation began over 20 years ago. She was the first patient of the late Dr. Thelma Tupasi, one of the Philippines’ most respected TB specialists, to undergo treatment for drug-resistant tuberculosis (DR-TB) with TB meningitis. Dr. Tupasi’s pioneering work in tuberculosis treatment and her compassionate approach to patient care helped save Louie’s life and laid the foundation for her eventual leadership role in TB advocacy.

As TBPeople Philippines reflects on its own journey, it acknowledges that much of its success in advocacy and community support is deeply rooted in the foundation laid by the Tropical Disease Foundation. The event was a celebration of collaboration and shared purpose, as both organizations continue their vital work in improving TB care and reducing the stigma associated with the disease.

Looking ahead, TBPeople Philippines is committed to continuing the legacy of the Tropical Disease Foundation by empowering TB survivors, advancing public education, and advocating for stronger healthcare systems.
